How to Clean and Prepare Irish Sea Moss Gel
***Filtered, distilled or spring water recommended for all stages of the cleaning and preparation process.***
Here are the steps to thoroughly clean Irish Sea Moss and prepare a gel to be used in your smoothies, soups, stews, skin care products, etc. Irish Sea Moss works well as a thickener in any of your favorite recipes!
1. Carefully sift through dry Irish Sea Moss to remove any potential sea elements, such as sea shells, other sea weeds, etc.
2. Rinse thoroughly under water. Once water touches it, it will automatically rehydrate the Irish Sea Moss.
3. Soak in water with fresh lemon or lime for 15 to 30 minutes. The prolonged soaking time helps reduce the fresh ocean smell. (Just as if you were soaking salted fish. :) )
*Unlike Genus Gracilaria (Sea Moss), Irish Sea Moss does not need to soak for up to 24 hours in order to hydrate thoroughly.*
4. Drain water and rinse thoroughly again.
5. Once cleaned, place Irish Sea Moss in a blender with water in order to make your gel. The amount of water will depend on the thickness you desire. We recommend starting out with small amounts of water until desired consistency.
6. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a month, or in the freezer for up to a year.
